Dang Nhat Minh was awarded the Grand Prize earlier this month. This coincided with the “Dang Nhat Minh Film Month” held by Trigger Film Academy in collaboration with Storii to honor Minh’s 9 best films.

“I have a close attachment to Hanoi. This is where I’ve spent 60 years of my life. The Grand Prize of the 16th Bui Xuan Phai – For the Love of Hanoi Awards is evidence of my bond with the capital city,” said Minh.

During his career, Minh has produced many movies that are internationally recognized, including a number of movies about Hanoi including “Hanoi in the Winter of '46”, “Guava House”, “Jasmine”, “Return”, and “Don’t burn”.

“Hanoi in the Winter of '46” was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in 1997 and the Singapore International Film Festival in 1998. The movie “Guava House” won a number of prizes, including a Golden Lotus award at the 2001 Vietnam Film Festival, and a Young Jury Prize and a World Association of Cinema Clubs Donkihote Prize at the Swiss Locarno Film Festival in 2000.

The movie “Don’t burn” premiered at the 19th Annual Fukuoka Film Festival in Japan, winning the audience prize.

“Minh’s life has a close bond with Hanoi, so he depicts the city from different perspectives. Minh deserves the Bui Xuan Phai Award for his great contribution to, and great love for Hanoi,” Poet Bang Viet, Chairman of the Jury Board of the Bui Xuan Phai awards, said.

Director and People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh was born in Hue in 1938. His family didn't move to Hanoi until two years after the capital was liberated in 1954, but over the past 60 years, the city has shaped him and stirred a mix of emotions in him.

Minh grew up while witnessing many upheavals in Hanoi, and each period became the inspiration and subject of a film.

Minh’s movies evoke a spirit of nostalgia. He focuses on the story and personality of each character, showing the inner beauty of Hanoians.

Director Minh said about his film “Jasmine”, “The film is about the Hanoians we meet in everyday life on the streets who are struggling with concerns and worries about making ends meet. The movie doesn’t twist and turn. It simply reflects the humble life of Hanoians.”

Dang Nhat Minh is one of the few Vietnamese directors of global renown. His films have become part of Hanoi’s cultural heritage.

In 1993, Dang Nhat Minh was recognized as a People's Artist.

In 2005, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Gwangju International Film Festival.

In 2007, he was honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his contributions to cinematography.

In 2016, he was honored as an outstanding citizen of Hanoi.

In 2022, he was named a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture.
