In recent days, the melody of the “Dance of unity” has been played at 8 p.m every day in the dance club in To Hieu ward, Son La province. The club members passionately dance to the background music of the dance.

“We are rehearsing the ‘Dance of unity’ for the upcoming music and art program. The choreography is beautiful and easy to perform on the upbeat background music,” said Ms. Le Thi Huong Lien, deputy head of the club.

The “Dance of unity” attracts people of different ages. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, the oldest member of the dance club, said the dance leaves a deep impression on her.

“I’m 70 years old. I love the ‘Dance of unity’ because it is easy to remember and perform. I’m excited to practice the performance,” said Hoa.

The “Dance of unity” reflects love for Ms. Phong’s homeland, Son La, the land of revolution, culture, and solidarity between different ethnic minorities.

Emeritus Artist Pham Hong Thu, Director of Son La province’s Music and Dance Theatre, said what is unique about the “Dance of unity” is that it combines the folk dances of 12 ethnic minority groups living in Son La and depicts the cultural values of many others.

“The five-minute work converges the cultural values and dances of different ethnic groups such as Au eo dance of Kho Mu people, Cheo (Traditional Opera) of the lowland in the northern region. It also includes choreographic movements from Western countries like France and Germany.”

Last November, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism granted a certificate of copyright for the “Dance of unity”. Son La province is planning to record, produce and promote this work.

“We are popularizing the dance of unity to local cultural cadres. This dance has received positive response from people across the province. ‘The dance of unity’ also helps preserve and promote cultural values of ethnic minority groups in Vietnam,” said Mr. Tran Tan Phong, Deputy Head of Son La’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
