(VOVWORLD) -The armed confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon continued to escalate following an Israeli airstrike on the outskirts of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on Tuesday.

This marked the first time in nearly 10 months that the Lebanese capital had been targeted by Israel amid ongoing tensions. According to the Israeli military, the airstrike targeted Fuad Shukr, a senior Hezbollah commander who was accused of a missile attack on Israel's Golan Heights on July 27, which resulted in the deaths of 12 Israeli teenagers.

The airstrike, executed by a drone, marked a significant escalation in the conflict, being the first Israeli air attack on Beirut in nearly 10 months of intense cross-border hostilities with Hezbollah.

Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bouhabib urged Hezbollah to exercise restraint and avoid escalating the situation. He also announced plans to file a complaint against Israel with the United Nations Security Council.
