Global plastics treaty not likely this year, says EU Commissioner

(VOVWORLD) -It will be very difficult for countries to agree on a new global treaty to tackle plastic pollution by the end of this year as planned, said Virginijus Sinkevicius, European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, on Wednesday.

In March 2022, the United Nations approved a landmark agreement establishing a global treaty to address plastic pollution.

The fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC5) in Busan, South Korea, in November, 2024, will be the final round of talks on the treaty.

INC4, which took place last April in Ottawa, Canada, struggled with divisions on a number of issues, particularly limits on plastic production.
