(VOVWORLD) - US President Joe Biden on Thursday addressed the nation for the first time since  Tuesday’s election, promising a peaceful power transition.

“Yesterday, I spoke with president-elect Trump, congratulated him on his victory, and I assured him I would direct my entire administration to work with his team to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition. That’s what the American people deserve. Campaigns are a contest of competing visions. A country chooses one or the other. We accept the choice the country made. I will fulfill my oath, and I will honor the Constitution. On January 20, we'll have a peaceful transfer of power here in America,” Biden said.

Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, has accepted defeat and pledged to participate in a peaceful transition process.

The Electoral College will meet and cast their votes on December 17. The result of the electoral votes will be announced on January 6. If nothing changes, Trump will be sworn in on January 20.

President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday announced that Susie Wiles, one of his two campaign managers, will be his White House chief of staff, entrusting a top position to a political operative who helped the Republican win election.
