The launch of the month, themed “Connecting, Sharing, and Spreading”, is part of activities to mark the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day (May 8). National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam were among the attendees.
Addressing the ceremony, Mr. Dam said supporting needy people is a humanitarian act, a tradition of the Vietnamese people, and the guideline of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and the Vietnam Red Cross Society.
“The Vietnamese Party and State always respect and support the guideline of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and create the best possible conditions for the operation of the Vietnam Red Cross Society. The Humanitarian Month, which is observed across Vietnam for the first time this year, demonstrates the community’s interest in charity work and the spreading of humanitarian spirit”, Deputy Prime Minister Dam said.
He acknowledged the cooperation and help of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the contributions of the Vietnam Red Cross Society, and millions of volunteers and philanthropists to promote humanitarian movements.
According to Nguyen Thi Xuan Thu, President of the Vietnam Red Cross Society, during the Humanitarian Month in May, activities are intense from the 8th, the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, to the 19th, the birthday of President Ho Chi Minh, who founded the Vietnam Red Cross Society.
Thu said: “I suggest the Vietnam Red Cross Society at all levels promote their communications on humanitarian values of President Ho Chi Minh’s ideology and raise more funds for disadvantaged people, especially children and victims of traffic accidents. Party committees and administrations should be more aware of humanitarian movements to rally more people to participate in.”
The launch ceremony was followed by a walking parade around Hoan Kiem Lake in downtown Hanoi.
