Ambassador Nguyen Thi Van Anh, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to UNESCO, said that the recognition is not only a source of pride for Vietnam but also an international acknowledgment of the outstanding efforts made by the cities in promoting lifelong learning for local residents.
The distinction also recognizes Vietnam’s effective guidelines and policies on international integration and education promotion, and efforts to build a learning society, and enhance the quality of education and human resources, she said.
Ha Trung Chien, Secretary of Son La City Party Committee, said the fact that Son La is enrolled in the global learning city network contributes to building a good image of a northwest province with beautiful mountains and hospitable people.
“Municipal leaders are well aware that becoming a member of the global learning network is only the first step. Son La City will adopt specific programs and plans to achieve the criteria. Our highest goal is to improve the quality of education and training, so that people, organizations and communities can enjoy lifelong learning,” Chien said.
Vietnam now has 5 cities recognized as members of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, including Sa Dec and Cao Lanh in Dong Thap province and Vinh in Nghe An province.
