Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh was a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who lived abroad for many years and helped introduce Buddhism and Vietnamese culture to the world, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang said on Sunday.

Upon hearing of the passing of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs extends its deepest condolences to the Buddhist sect, the Vietnamese Buddhist community at home and abroad, and the family of the Zen Master, said Ms. Hang.

Thich Nhat Hanh, a monk with global influence, passed away at Tu Hieu pagoda in Hue city in central Vietnam on Saturday, aged 96.

He studied and practiced Zen Buddhism in Hue from 1942. He later established Plum Village monastery in France and Zen Buddhism practice centers in the US, Germany, Thailand, and other countries. While living abroad, he returned to Vietnam several times to give lectures on mindfulness and peace. In 2017 he returned to live out his last days at Tu Hieu pagoda.
