(VOVworld) – On Wednesday, the 69th session of the UN General Assembly discussed the reduction of crime and violence, which is critical to global development. Yury Fedotov, Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), said crimes are hindering sustainable development. Countries with underdeveloped economies and lax law enforcement have created fertile ground for criminal activity.

To prevent violent crimes, Fedotov said, the UNODC will detail action plans which give priority to healthcare, social security, and global struggle against drugs, terrorism, and corruption. He informed participants that the UN will hold its 13th Crime Congress in Doha, Qatar, next month to discuss coordinated anti-crime measures.
