(VOVWORLD) -British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Monday that the first flight carrying asylum seekers to Rwanda will leave in 10-12 weeks, as he set out his flagship policy for tackling illegal migration.

Sunak told a press conference that his government has booked commercial charter planes and has 500 trained personnel ready to escort the migrants all the way to Rwanda.

This is part of a policy which he hopes will help his ruling Conservative party win the support of voters.

The controversial plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda cleared its final hurdle on Monday after a marathon tussle between the upper and lower chambers of parliament that lasted late into the night.

Tens of thousands of migrants from countries at war or in chronic poverty in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa have crossed the English Channel into Britain in recent years.

Stopping the flow of illegal immigrants tops the government’s list of priorities. But some consider the deportation plan to Rwanda inhumane because Rwanda is not a safe destination.
