President Truong Tan Sang arrived in Prague on Sunday, beginning his 3-day state visit to the Czech Republic. During talks held after the welcome ceremony on Monday, President Sang and President Milos Zeman discussed ways to extend bilateral ties in a range of fields. President Sang highlighted Vietnam’s foreign policy of strengthening traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation with traditional friends including the Czech Republic. President Milos Zeman described President Sang’s visit as an important milestone in bilateral ties. The two leaders agreed to jointly organize activities to celebrate the 65th anniversary of bilateral ties.

Both sides agreed to effectively promote the mechanisms of the Vietnam-Czech Inter-Governmental Committee, increase bilateral trade, and support the businesses of their countries.

They agreed to enhance cooperation in education, security and national defense, culture, sports, tourism, and transport. President Zeman backed Vietnam in enhancing its cooperation with the EU. He said that the Czech Republic had approved the framework agreement on the EU-Vietnam Comprehensive partnership and committed to lobby the EU to approve the framework agreement soon and finalize negotiations on the EU-Vietnam Free Trade agreement.

They discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern including the East Sea issue, and agreed disputes must be resolved by peaceful measures based on international law including the 1982 UNCLOS to ensure stability, safety, and free passage.

At a meeting with Vietnamese Ambassadors and communities from several European countries following his arrival, President Sang hailed each Vietnamese community’s contributions to socio-economic development in their host country and deepening the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Central and Eastern European nations.Mr. Sang said:“The government of the Czech Republic has recognized the Vietnamese community as an ethnic minority group. Therefore, we should do our best to integrate into the host country. We should be grateful that the Czech President often speaks highly of Vietnamese citizens living here. OVs should do more for their homeland and become a bridge linking Vietnam and the Czech Republic.”

President Truong Tan Sang reiterated that the Party and State always consider expatriates an inseparable part of Vietnam and an important driver of Vietnam’s development and prosperity.

Earlier, he visited the representative office of the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam in the Czech Republic and the Czech IDCE company.
