According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missile was launched toward the east coast of the Korean peninsula. No further details were provided.

The Japanese Coast Guard said an object believed to be a North Korean ballistic missile had fallen into the sea.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have increased following recent military activities by both sides. North Korea engaged in air combat training last Friday, immediately after the conclusion of the annual joint military exercise called Freedom Shield, which was conducted by the US and South Korea despite objections from Pyongyang.
