(VOVWORLD) - Tien Yen district, where rivers and roads converge, is a rendezvous spot for ethnic cultures in northeastern Vietnam. Since 2017, Tien Yen district in Quang Ninh province has hosted an annual Culture and Sports Week to promote the diverse local cultures.

Folk songs and dances were featured at the Tien Yen gala night which opened Culture and Sports Week from October 30. Dao, Tay, San Chay, and San Chi ethnic people flocked to a regional center to sing and dance together.

“I came here as early as 6pm and waited until now. It’s been a long time that we have had this wonderful festival. It cheers us up,” said Phun Thi Cuu in Phong Du commune.

“We thank the central and local leaders for organizing this joyful event. We really hope that it will lure more tourists to Quang Ninh province,” said Ny A sang, a Dao Thanh Y ethnic man.

During Culture and Sports Week the various minority groups showcase their unique culture and gain experience in cultural preservation. The week features traditional dragon boat racing on the Tien Yen river, a fair that sells the specialty products of the communes, Ha Lau ethnic market, and a cock pageant. 200 paintings and photos of the region were on display this year. Tours explored the local forest eco-system, beaches, and ethnic culture. Folk art performances and culinary demonstrations recreated a busy ancient town packed with boats and traders in Tien Yen district, once an economic and cultural hub.

Cao Tuong Huy, Vice Chairman of the Quang Ninh provincial People’s Committee, told VOV, “Tien Yen authorities and citizens are fully aware of our responsibility for making our district strong in economics, rich in culture, and stable in politics and social security. We aim to reestablish Tien Yen township before 2027, contributing to a stronger Quang Ninh province.”

Tien Yen district, at the heart of Quang Ninh’s northeast, is located on an artery linking Mong Cai border gate, Van Don international airport, Ha Long city, and Lang Son province.
