Kumquat growing area in Hoi An preparing for Tet

(VOVWORLD) - These days the ornamental kumquat cultivation area in Hoi An city is bustling, preparing to meet the demands of the upcoming Lunar New Year market. Most local ornamental kumquats have been pre-booked by flower shops, agents, and buyers inside and outside the province.

Kumquat garden owners in Thanh Ha ward are pruning branches to have the most beautiful pots. Nguyen Chin, a local gardener said this year his family planted nearly 600 kumquat pots of various sizes. In order for kumquats to ripen beautifully during Tet, growers must know how to care for them properly. This care extends beyond just cultivating the soil and watering regularly.

Chin said: “We have grown kumquat trees for 10 years. Traders have made advance deposits. With fewer storms this year, the kumquat trees have flourished, producing splendid fruit. After deducting expenses, we earned over 20,000 USD. We are very happy with the harvest.”

Truong Huong, Vice Chairman of the Thanh Ha Ward People’s Committee, told VOV: “Thanh Ha is one of the largest kumquat growing areas in Hoi An city. Compared to last year, this year the number of kumquat traders making advance payment is relatively large. This year, the yield is high and the fruit is of good quality and beautiful, creating a huge source of income for people.”

Nguyen Anh, Chairman of the Hoi An City Farmers Association, said farmers have been supported with loans and planting techniques.

Anh said: "Hoi An’s kumquat trees grow very well, exhibiting robust and abundant growth that surpasses previous years. Growers are yielding large and beautiful kumquat fruits. Traders have already made deposits on nearly 70% of the produce from these orchards. We are helping communes and wards to establish professional associations for kumquat cultivation and providing them with fertilizer. We have also encouraged local people to develop new farms in rural areas and have also promoted the cultivation of organic kumquat trees to cater to consumer demands.”

According to the Thanh Ha Ward People’s Committee, there are more than 700 households specializing in growing kumquats. They are expected to sell about 55,000 pots of ornamental kumquats, an increase of 20,000 pots compared to last year.
