(VOVWORLD) - Hanoi was ranked among the world’s 100 smartest cities, according to the 2024 Smart City Index. The index was produced by the Institute for Management Development (IMD) World Competitiveness Center’s Smart City Observatory in collaboration with the World Smart Sustainable Cities Organization (WeGO).

This year, Hanoi ranked 97th, up 3 places compared to last year. This result is partly due to the city’s initial achievements in digital transformation. For the first time, municipal leaders used completely digital signatures on a shared software for the administrative system. All state agencies in the capital city have applied digital signatures. A number of shared information databases have been deployed to administrations at all levels to better serve internal operations and handle administrative procedures.

Many services in the city’s inner area are implemented online, creating favorable conditions for people and businesses. One great example is integrating electronic medical records in the national population database. Citizen identification has been used in settling health insurance for medical examination and treatment. The issuance of criminal record certificates via the VNeID app has been tested since April 22.

Hanoi is preparing to launch the “Ha NoiS” application with many built-in utilities to help people and businesses access the city’s state administrative agencies in a modern way.

Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Ha Minh Hai said: “We will promote digitization, connection, sharing, online meetings, contactless administrative procedures and cashless payments. Other measures include strengthening digital data, digital infrastructure, legal corridors and digital human resources.

By 2025, Hanoi aims to further enhance its digital transformation and develop towards a green urban area while striving to be among the leading localities in digital transformation. By 2030, it is expected to become a smart, modern city, gradually connecting with the smart urban network throughout the region and the world.

The 2024 Smart City Index listed 142 cities worldwide and graded them on the basis of how they use advanced technology to improve the lives of their citizens.
