Its first radio broadcast was when Vietnam’s Declaration of Independence was read by President Ho Chi Minh at Ba Dinh Square on National Day, September 2nd, marking the birth of a most reliable source of information for the Party, the Government, and the people, closely linked to the glorious revolutionary history of the nation. Radio the Voice of Vietnam has made a significant contribution to national construction and defence, and has been a bridge linking Vietnam with international friends. VOV is the only information channel that broadcasts not only in Vietnamese but also in 11 other foreign languages and 12 ethnic minority languages. To its radio channels, VOV later added a television channel, marking a new era for VOV, which now encompasses all mass media: radio, TV, print and online. For these achievements, VOV was honored with the titles Labor Hero in the renovation period, and Hero of the People's Armed Forces. Activities to celebrate the 67th anniversary of VOV have included a friendly inter-staff football match, an art exchange called “Truong Sa-country’s island” anda second French singing contest held by VOV’s overseas service. The Director of the Overseas Service, Doan Thi Trung, says: "This year we noticed that a larger number of VOV listeners participated in the contest. What’s new about this year’s contest is that we uploaded all of the performances to our website so more people can hear and comment on the performances. We received many good comments and suggestions from both domestic and foreign listeners."
The Prime Minister has just approved a master development plan for VOV until 2020 with a goal of expanding the national radio and TV network and the Overseas Service to be the world Radio channel.
