Participants affirmed that plastic waste in the ocean is a global problem, which requires international cooperation to handle instead of the isolated action of individual nations.
Dr. Nguyen Le Tuan, Director of the Sea and Island Research Institute, said Vietnam has two laws pertaining to plastic waste: the Law on Environmental Protection and the Law on Natural Resources and Environment of Sea and Islands. Vietnam has issued a Strategy on Sustainable Development of Vietnamese Maritime Economy until 2030 with a vision to 2045. He said regional countries should have a coordinated plan of action plus appropriate resources to address the plastic waste problem in each country and enhance the use of recycled products and recycle technologies.
