(VOVworld)- Ca Mau Cape National Park in the southernmost province of Ca Mau received the certificate recognizing it as the 2,088th world Ramsar site at a ceremony in Ngoc Hien district, Ca Mau province on Saturday.

This is Vietnam’s 5th Ramsar site and the 2088th of the world. Located in Ngoc Hien district, Ca Mau province, Ca Mau Cape National Park covers an area of 42,000 hectares which are home to 93 bird species, 26 species of mammals, 43 species of reptiles, 9 species of amphibians and 233 fish species. The park is also home to some rare species such as the gray-foot pelican, rare otters and the black-back box turtle. Le Dung, Vice Chairman of Ca Mau Provincial People’s Committee said: "The recognition of Ca Mau Cape National Park as a Ramsar site is significant as it recognizes potential and strength of the ecological system of the wetland in Ca Mau province. It also recognizes the effort that the Provincial Party Committee and local people have made in protecting the environment and the ecological system of the area".
The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands, to stem the progressive encroachment on and loss of wetlands now and in the future, recognizing the fundamental ecological functions of wetlands and their economic, cultural, scientific, and recreational value. The recognition will be a chance for the local authorities and people to preserve the flora and fauna in the coastal wetlands for scientific research and tourism development.
