Vo Van Thuong elected as President of Vietnam

(VOVWORLD) -The National Assembly elected Vo Van Thuong as the new President of Vietnam at its fourth extraordinary session on Thursday. The newly-elected President is a Politburo member, Permanent member of the 13th Party Central Committee’s Secretariat, and a deputy of the 15th National Assembly.

Under the national flag, before the National Assembly and voters nationwide, President Vo Van Thuong promised to be absolutely loyal to the Fatherland, to the people, and to the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and make efforts to fulfill the tasks entrusted to him by the Party, the State and the people.

At the inauguration ceremony, President Thuong thanked the National Assembly for giving him the opportunity to serve the Fatherland and the people, saying it is great honor and also a very heavy responsibility.

Expressing respect and gratitude to President Ho Chi Minh, the founder and the first President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, he promised to constantly study and follow President Ho Chi Minh’s example.

President Thuong  said the more proudly he feels about the country's position and reputation, the more deeply aware of his tasks he becomes as Vietnam is now entering a new development stage to realize the aspiration of becoming a happy and prosperous country.

The President reiterated the vital, fundamental, solid principle of being consistent in the creative application and development of Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh's thought, steadfast in the goal of national independence and socialism, and steadfast in the Party's renewal policy and ensuring the nation’s interests.

"In the journey to serve the Fatherland and the people in the coming time, I will constantly strive to fulfill the mission of the President, and to together with the Party and the army to strive for the goal of making Vietnam a strong country with rich people and democracy steadily moving toward socialism, constantly taking care of building and promoting the strength of great national unity, attentively listening to the Vietnamese people, who are the root, the starting platform and the aim of all policies and decisions."

"I will resolutely fight against corruption, negativity, perfect institutions to ensure sustainable development, build a clean, strong state apparatus, cheer for the spirit of creativity and dynamism, dare to think and dare to do for the benefit of the people and the nation," he said. 

President Vo Van Thuong pledged to create an environment for everyone, especially the younger generation, to approach development opportunities and to devote themselves to the country.

Regarding the task of national construction and defense and foreign relations, Thuong said: "It’s imperative to persistently and resolutely defend national territorial integrity, maintain a stable peaceful environment to develop the country, build a strong people's armed forces, effectively contribute to the friendship and development of the region and the world in the spirit that Vietnam is friend, a reliable partner, and an active and responsible member of the international community."

Vo Van Thuong was born on December 13, 1970, in An Phuoc commune, Mang Thit district, Vinh Long province. He is a senior official of the Communist Party of Vietnam and a person of prestige, capability, and experience. He has served in many important leadership positions of the central and local level.

Thuong has multiple academic qualification: Senior political theoretical qualification, Bachelor of philosophy, and Master of Social Sciences and Humanities.

He was an alternate member of the 10th Party Central Committee, and a member of the 11th, 12th, and 13th Party Central Committee. He is a Secretary of the 13th Party Central Committee.

He is a Politburo member of the 12th and the 13th Party Central Committee and a deputy of the 12th, 14th and 15th National Assembly.

In February 2021, he was assigned by the Politburo to be Permanent member of the Party Secretariat in charge of internal affairs, finance, economy, foreign affairs of the Party, and the people's foreign affairs.
