Vietnam’s President meets foreign leaders in New York

(VOVWORLD) - President Nguyen Xuan Phuc had meetings with foreign leaders in New York on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly’s 76th session.

Meeting with Republic of Korean President Moon Jae-in, President Phuc said the two countries need to contain the coronavirus so they can promote their strategic partnership. They will celebrate the 30th anniversary of their diplomatic relations next year. Phuc asked that the Republic of Korea continue to expand its FDI projects in Vietnam, both in size and number, and ramp up its technology transfers to Vietnamese firms. He pledged further support for Korean companies doing business in Vietnam.

President Moon said the RoK wants to strengthen the strategic partnership with Vietnam, increase bilateral trade to 100 billion USD by 2023, and expand cooperation in bio products, finance, and digital economy. He announced that the Seoul is donating more than 1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to Vietnam, which will arrive in mid-October.

Meeting with Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin, President Phuc urged Mr. Martin to push for the early ratification of the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) by the Irish parliament and continue to provide Official Development Assistance (ODA) to Vietnam. Mr. Phuc said he hopes Ireland will help Vietnam obtain more COVID-19 vaccines and medical supplies.

Meeting with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, President Phuc asked Denmark to help Vietnam obtain more COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX Facility. Frederiksen agreed, and said she will encourage more Danish investment in Vietnam’s maritime transport, seaport construction, shipbuilding, manufacturing of energy equipment, renewable energy, green technologies, sustainable husbandry and fisheries, green transformation, and climate change mitigation.

Meeting with Borut Pahour, President of Slovenia, which currently holds the rotating Presidency of the EU Council, President Phuc said Vietnam values close collaboration with the EU in fisheries development and sustainable seafood exploitation. He urged Slovenia to support removal of the “yellow card” warning imposed on Vietnam's aquatic products. Mr. Phuc insisted that Vietnam advocates responsible and sustainable seafood exploitation in line with international law.
