Counselor Do Ngoc Thuy, Representative of the Vietnamese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, addressed a meeting of the UN Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee) in New York on Monday.
Thuy said supporting refugees cannot be considered a substitute for finding a long-term solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He stressed the need to ensure the legitimate rights and interests of refugees by establishing a Palestinian State with East Jerusalem as its capital, living in peace beside the State of Israel, with border lines recognized internationally on the basis of the pre-1967 borders and relevant UN resolutions.
Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), said that increased violence on the West Bank has severely impacted the agency's delivery of essential services to refugees.
