(VOVworld)-Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung says disarmament and nuclear weapon non-proliferation are the most important factors to minimize the risk to nuclear safety and security. Addressing the 2nd Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul on Tuesday, Prime Minister Dung stressed that Vietnam has been actively developing related legal frameworks and infrastructure and participate in international agreements to honor its commitments to nuclear safety and security, particularly after the 1st summit in the US in 2010.
Vietnam has strongly responded to the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism and is considering the ratification of the additional protocol. Mr. Dung underlined that Vietnam and other ASEAN member states are joining efforts to help build a Southeast Asian region of peace, stability and without nuclear weapons. He reiterated Vietnam’s resolve to pursue its nuclear power program to meet national energy security needs.
At the end of the summit, delegates adopted the Seoul Communique, which confirms their determination to enhance nuclear safety and security, focusing on a global nuclear security mechanism, the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency, nuclear materials and many other areas. The Netherlands will host the next summit in 2014.
On the sidelines of the Seoul meeting, Prime Minister Dung met with New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani.
