Vietnam ranks second in SEA Games 30, receives flag to host next Games

(VOVWORLD) - After 10 days of competition, the Vietnamese delegation ranks 2nd in the tally with 98 gold medals, which is far more than the initial target of 65 to 70 gold medals.

The Philippines ranks first with 149 gold medals. Singapore’s male swimmer Zheng Wen and Vietnam’s female swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien are named the best athletes as each of them wins 6 gold and 2 silver medals.

Vietnam will host the 31st Southeast Asian Games in 2021. The Philippines, this year’s host, handed over the flag to Vietnam at the Games’ closing ceremony in Manila on Wednesday evening.

Vietnam staged a performance highlighting the Vietnamese land, people, sports, and culture to invite Southeast Asian athletes to Hanoi for the next Games.

National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, who is on a working visit to Moscow, sent a message of congratulations to the Vietnamese delegation. She said the SEA Games 30 marks an important milestone for Vietnamese sports in the region with 98 gold medals, which is much higher than expected. Both the men and women’s football team won the gold medals.
