Ms. Hang made the statement in response to reporters’ queries about Vietnam’s reaction to a Malaysian court’s ruling on Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong’s case relating to the death of a DPRK national named Kim Chol in Kuala Lumpur airport in 2017.

The Shah Alam High Court on Monday sentenced Huong to three years and four months imprisonment for causing injuries using dangerous means, instead of the initial charge of murder. The penalty is calculated from the time Huong was arrested in February, 2017.

Spokesperson Hang said the Vietnamese Government, relevant agencies, and the Vietnam Bar Federation have implemented measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Huong in her trial in Malaysia.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Malaysia Le Quy Quynh insisted that Huong was a victim in this case, just like her co-accused, Siti Aisyah from Indonesia, who was released last month.
