During talks in Tokyo on Monday, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe pledged to enhance political trust through regular high-level visits and meetings, reinforce economic links, promote Japanese investment in Vietnam, and finally to intensify collaboration in major projects on infrastructure, high-quality personnel training, and climate change response.

They reiterated the importance of ensuring the peace, security, safety and freedom of flight and nautical navigation in the East Sea, and not using or threatening to use force of any kind. They showed their support for the settlement of disputes by peaceful measures on the basis of international law, the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and respect for diplomatic and legal processes. Both sides highlighted the need to fully and effectively implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and soon to finalize an effective and legally binding Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).

“We pledged to join hands for the success of the Mekong-Japan Summit Meeting and promote ASEAN-Japan relations as Vietnam is working as coordinator of the ASEAN-Japan Dialogue for 2018-2021. Vietnam has approved the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and is working with Japan to push ahead with the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP),” said Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

“Vietnam welcomes and backs Japan’s efforts and initiatives to ensure prosperity, free trade and navigation safety in the Indo-Pacific region on the basis of the UN Charter and international law,” he added.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Vietnam’s sustainable development plays an important role in ensuring the peace and prosperity of the Mekong region, and pledged Japan’s continued support for Vietnam’s sustainable growth.
