(VOVWORLD) - A European Commission delegation has praised Vietnam’s efforts in following the commission’s recommendations to fight illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, according to Veronika Veits, Director for the International Ocean Governance and Sustainable Fisheries at the EC’s Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

At the conclusion of her 10-day working session on Friday, Veits said ministries, agencies, and localities have been aware of their responsibilities and showed a strong determination to fight IUU fishing. She emphasized the need to rally public involvement in the effort.

The EC delegation suggested Vietnam speed up the installation of monitoring systems, especially on big fishing boats, and impose strict penalties on those caught deliberately flouting regulations on the use of monitoring devices.
