The week-long event will be attended by 200 participants, including nearly 100 delegates and guests from 49 countries.

Participants will discuss and assess global peace, security, especially new developments in traditional and non-tradition security issues, and challenges to world stability.

At a press briefing in Hanoi on Friday, Phan Anh Son, Vice President and Secretary General of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations, said the hosting offers an opportunity for Vietnam to express gratefulness to international friends, organizations, and peace movements who supported Vietnam during the two resistance wars in the 20th century to gain the national independence and reunification.

“The assembly is an occasion to introduce to the world Vietnam, its land and people, and the renewal process over the past 35 years. This is also a chance for VUFO and the WPC to enhance friendship and cooperation,” Son added.

Vietnam’s hosting of the WPC’s 22nd Assembly demonstrates its active contributions to the council and the world peace movement at large, helping improve the role and standing of Vietnam, including VUFO and the Vietnam Peace Committee, in the world peace movement, and show that Vietnam as a responsible and active member of the international community.

The World Peace Council was established in 1949 with the secretariat’s headquarters in Athens, Greece.

The WPC, an organisation leading the world peace movement, gathers 135 organisations of communist and left-wing parties in more than 100 countries.

Vietnam is one of founding countries of the WPC. It sent 11 delegates to attend the assembly in 1949.

In 2017, Vietnam hosted the WPC executive board in Hanoi.
