(VOVWORLD) - China’s so-called “fishing ban” in the East Sea from May 1 to August 18 violates Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago and Vietnam’s sovereign right and jurisdiction over the waters and exclusive economic zones defined in the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, said deputy spokesperson for the Vietnam Ministry of Foreign Affairs Doan Khac Viet.

At a press conference in Hanoi on Thursday, Mr. Viet said Vietnam’s stance on China’s so-called “fishing ban” has been consistent and clearly stated over the years.

Vietnam demanded China respect Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Paracel and Vietnam’s sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction over its waters, not complicate the situation, and contribute to maintaining peace and stability in the East Sea, said Mr. Viet.
