Vietnam, Cambodia renew resolve to solidify good neighborliness

(VOVWORLD) - The Prime Ministers of Vietnam and Cambodia on Tuesday reiterated their determination to further develop the good neighborliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive, sustainable and long-term cooperation, towards making their bilateral cooperation more practical and effective.

During talks in Phnom Penh, visiting Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Cambodian counterpart Hunsen agreed to boost defense and security, underlining the principle of not allowing hostile forces to use one country’s territory to sabotage the other’s security and interest.

They agreed to continue working together to maintain political stability, security, and social law and order in each country, prevent cross-border crimes, and ensure cyber security and citizen protection.

The leaders pledged to strengthen connectivity between the two economies, prioritize cooperation in digital transformation, and increase support for the building of an independent and self-reliant economy parallel with extensive international integration.

They agreed to respect and fully implement signed border treaties and seek appropriate solutions to completing the demarcation of and border marker planting on the remaining 16% of land border between the two countries. Any emerging issues will be settled in the spirit of solidarity and friendship to build a shared border of peace, stability, and cooperation, they said.

The Prime Ministers underscored the importance of maintaining security, safety, and freedom of navigation and overflight, increasing trust, not threatening or using force, honoring international law, and settling disputes by peaceful means on the basis of international law including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. They stressed the need to support the full implementation of the Declaration of Conduct of Parties in the East Sea and speed up the finalization of the Code of Conduct.

The same day, PM Chinh paid a courtesy visit to Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni and met Senate President Say Chhum.
