The discussion centered on preparations for the upcoming Trump–Putin summit later this month in Budapest. Two priorities of the summit will be exploring a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine and improving bilateral relations.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Moscow’s stance on Ukraine is “consistent and well known”. Russia insists on maintaining the current situation on the battlefield as a prerequisite for moving toward detailed peace negotiations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that “a negative scenario” could unfold at the Budapest conference, voicing concern that the two presidents might agree on conditions that Kyiv “cannot accept.” But Zelensky added that he would be willing to attend the meeting if invited.
