Representing the US are Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. China will be represented by Vice Premier He Lifeng.
"We’ll meet on Saturday and Sunday. And we have shared interest that this isn’t sustainable. Tariffs of 145% and 125% are effectively equivalent to a trade embargo. We don’t want to decouple, what we want is fair trade," said Treasury Secretary Bessent.
This is the first time senior US and Chinese officials have met to discuss the trade tensions that have rapidly escalated since Donald Trump took office in January.
President Trump has imposed tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese goods, and China has retaliated with tariffs of 125% on US goods, along with several other countermeasures.
