(VOVWORLD) - The impacts of global warming are appearing faster than expected, according to a report released Monday by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a body of experts convened by the United Nations.

Up to 14% of species on land will face a very high risk of extinction at global warming levels of 1.5 DC, according to the report. That figure increases to 18% at 2 DC and all the way to 48% at 5 DC. N

early 11% of the global population, about 896 million people, live on low-elevation coasts directly exposed to climate and non-climate coastal hazards and that number may increase to 1 billion by 2050.

The report, produced by more than 200 climate experts, says local action is the key to mitigating climate change.
