(VOVWORLD) - Telecom operators must not buy any 5G equipment from Chinese giant Huawei and the UK’s 5G network will not be relating to Huawei at the end of 2027, UK Secretary of State for Digital Culture, Media and Sport Oliver Downden told a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

Dowden said this was not an easy decision, as it will delay 5G’s launch in the UK for up to 3 years and cost the UK 2.5 billion USD, but it is the right step for the UK’s telecom industry, security, and economy.  He said London is ready to work with its 4 partners in the Five Eyes alliance - the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand - to find alternative solutions.

Chinese Ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming called the decision disappointing. A Huawei spokesperson called on the UK government to reconsider the ban.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington applauds the move and will work with British partners to develop a strong and safe 5G network.
