Tug-of-war becomes world heritage

(VOVworld) - Vietnam’s folk game tug-of-war and its ritual was recognized as multinational projects for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage by the UNESCO at the 10th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Namibia on Wednesday.

Tug-of-war is played in different ways in East and Southeast Asian countries- the Republic of Korea, the Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam which sent their files for UNESCO recognition of this game. With the folk game, Vietnam has so far had 10 UNESCO-recognized world cultural heritages.
Nguyen Van Huy, Member of the National Council for Cultural Heritage, took part in compiling documents to submit UNESCO: “Tug of war is played not only in Vietnam but also in some other Southeast Asian nations. The tug of war game showed traditional cultural values of the Southeast Asian countries which are the wish for bumper crop, health and peace”.
