Top leaders of Vietnam, Laos vow to boost great friendship, special ties

General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Central Committee and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith is on a two-day official visit to Vietnam, his first foreign trip as Lao Party leader and President for the 2021-2026 term.

The two leaders affirmed that Vietnam and Laos are determined to maintain and nurture theirbilateral ties. They agreed to promote the comprehensive cooperation between the two countries on the basis of upholding independence, self-reliance, and mutual benefits, giving priority to and supporting each other.

They emphasized the need to deepen political ties and cooperation in strategic issues relating to security and development of each country and to maintain high-level visits.

The leaders agreed to strengthen mutual support in regional and global issues and enhance cooperation with Cambodia in implementing an agreement on the Development Triangle between the 3 countries and an action plan on connecting the 3 economies by 2030.

Vietnam and Laos will work closely together and with other countries for effective and sustainable management, development, and use of the Mekong River’s water resources.

The leaders underlined the importance of maintaining peace, security and stability as well as ensuring security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea, settling disputes in the sea by peaceful measures through international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and promoting the full and effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and working towards the formation of an effective and practical Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC), in accordance with international law.     

After the talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of a number of cooperation documents.
