The "leaders" category features US President Donald Trump, presidential candidate Joe Biden, Chinese President Xi Jinping, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

In the "pioneers" category, Time honors Chinese scientist Zhang Yongzhen, who led a team that published the first SARS-CoV-2 genome just days after the first cluster of cases emerged.

Its “icons” category includes the founders of the Black Lives Matter movement, activist Angela Davis, and tennis star Naomi Osaka.
