(VOVworld) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad hailed the liberation of the ancient city of Palmyra from IS, saying the victory shows the effectiveness of the army’s strategy in its battle against terrorists.

Syria’s national TV quoted President Assad calling the liberation of the historic city of Palmyra an important achievement and another indication of the success of the strategy of the Syrian army and its allies in the war against terrorism. The Syrian army claims it has taken full control of Palmyra, signaling the fall of the Islamic State.
On Sunday, thousands of Iraqis in Mosul fled their homes after the government launched a new campaign against IS militants in the south of the city. The Iraqi government said its attack was the first phase of a long-term campaign to retake control of Mosul.
