(VOVWORLD) -Spain’s constitutional court on Thursday suspended the call for a referendum on Catalonia’s independence after agreeing to review an appeal by central authorities in Madrid.

The Spanish government’s spokesman, Inigo Mendez de Vigo, said the government is responsible for executing law and protecting the rights of its citizens. He cited Article 155 of Spain’s Constitution defining the government’s right to suspend the region’s autonomous right. The court has warned 947 mayors of the Catalan that their legal duty is to impede the vote which is considered a violation of Spain’s law.
