South Korea, Japan pledge to elevate bilateral ties to new height

(VOVWORLD) -Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol affirmed that improving South Korea-Japan relations will bring great benefits to the two peoples, and agreed to develop bilateral relations to a new height in the future.

Speaking at a joint press conference after their Summit in Seoul on Sunday, President Yoon said the two leaders agreed that Seoul and Tokyo need to cooperate more closely in security, economics, and global affairs.

They praised their comprehensive cooperation in security and the economy, and the strong recovery of people-to-people exchanges. The number of people traveling between the two countries grew to nearly 2 million in the first 3 months of this year.

The two leaders agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation and cooperation with the US to promote peace and security in the region, agreed on the strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific region, and pledged to strengthen their Indo-Pacific strategic coordination.

They also agreed to send a Korean inspection mission to obtain objective verification of the problem of contaminated water at the Fukushima nuclear plant that is causing concern to the Korean people.

Prime Minister Kishida is visiting South Korea on Sunday and Monday, the first trip by a Japanese leader to South Korea in 12 years.
