Blatter won 133 votes out of the 209 votes cast by member associations, while 73 votes for opposition candidate Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of Jordan. As neither candidate reached two-thirds majority, the election was poised to go to a second round where a simple majority would have sufficed to clinch the presidency. However, Prince Al Hussein decided against going for a second ballot and withdrew from the race. Blatter has become FIFA’s President since 1998. Despite objection from the EU, the US, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, Mr. Blatter received support from Asia, Africa, and some football federations of Central America and Oceania to secure the presidency for the next four years. The 79-year-old president said age is not a problem and promised he would bring the FIFA boat back offshore.
