In order to purchase Russian natural gas, buyers must open ruble accounts in Russian banks. It is from these accounts that payments will be made for gas delivered after April 1, Putin said in a televised speech.

He warned that if payments do not comply, Russia will consider it a default on the part of buyers, with all the ensuing consequences.
