During the violent protests of the past weeks, more than 400 police stations were attacked. On August 6 the Bangladesh Police Subordinate Employees Association announced an indefinite strike in the interest of personal safety.
At the request of leaders of Bangladesh’s student protests and the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved the parliament and appointed Nobel economist Muhammad Yunus to lead an interim government. Yunus took the oath of office as head of Bangladesh's interim government last Thursday.
