(VOVWORLD) -Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the opening ceremony of the BRICS Summit 2025, along with leaders of BRICS member states and partner countries, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday. This is Vietnam’s first participation as a partner country of BRICS, a multilateral cooperation mechanism for emerging economies that is increasingly influential economically and politically.

This year’s Summit was themed “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance”. It was one of the most significant multilateral events of the year, convening 20 heads of state and government, the United Nations Secretary-General, and leaders of several international organizations.

The PM joined high-level discussions on multilateralism, economic and financial cooperation, artificial intelligence, climate change, and global health. He participated in the announcement of the Leaders’ Framework Statement on Climate Finance that outlines strategies to attract investments for climate action, particularly in Global South nations, and the launch of the BRICS Partnership for the Elimination of Socially Determined Diseases.

As a BRICS partner country, PM Chinh said, Vietnam is a sincere friend, a reliable partner, and an active and responsible member of the international community. Vietnam is ready to work with BRICS and Global South countries to promote mutually beneficial cooperation, strengthen connectivity, jointly address common challenges, and build an effective, inclusive and sustainable global governance system.

Mr. Chinh proposed three strategic pioneering initiatives for BRICS and partner countries. The first is to pioneer rebuilding multilateralism, equality, anti-monopoly, protectionism, persistently pursuing dialogue, cooperation, and avoiding confrontation, on the basis of the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter and international law. The second is to pioneer promoting trade liberalization, equality, and anti-monopoly, and respecting the equal rights and legitimate interests of nations. The third is to pioneer promoting the power of artificial intelligence to serve humans, not replace humans.

"The complex changes in today's world further demonstrate the profound view of Brazilian President Lula da Silva. Firmly defending multilateralism is the only path we must take, and on that journey, Vietnam, together with BRICS and other Global South countries, must constantly strive, unite, and make efforts to build a truly fair, equitable, scientific, inclusive, and sustainable global governance system," said Prime Minister  Chinh said.

During the two-day gathering, BRICS member countries will discuss strengthening cooperation in health, artificial intelligence, and climate change. Host country Brazil expects the agreements reached at this year's meeting will boost effective cooperation and contribute to addressing the challenges of sustainable development for emerging economies.

The group of emerging economies (BRICS) was established in 2006, and currently has 10 member countries, including Russia, China, Brazil, India, South Africa, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Vietnam is one of its 10 partner countries.
