Mr. Trong told a gathering for overseas Vietnamese in Hanoi on Saturday ahead of the Lunar New Year (Tet) that the Party and State treasure the contributions by the Vietnamese community abroad to their homeland.

“What overseas Vietnamese have done to the Motherland demonstrate their patriotism. The Party and State sympathize with and share the hardships endured by people living far away from their homeland. We believe that Vietnamese people, wherever they are, will continue to uphold the spirit of solidarity and mutual support,” Mr. Trong said.

The same day, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc visited outstanding Vietnamese scholars in sociology, science, and mathematics.

In HCM city, Vice President Nguyen Ngoc Thinh attended a Tet welcoming program for 600 families of workers who are unable to return home for Lunar New Year celebrations. This year, HCM city has raised 10 million USD to help disadvantaged workers prepare for Tet. Local trade unions and businesses also gave 66,000 bus and train tickets worth 2 million USD for workers to return home for the Tet holiday.
