Just hours before the incident, New York officials held an outdoor event in Flushing, Queens, to condemn the wave of discrimination against Asian communities in New York. Mayor Bill de Blasio delivered a strong statement, saying “If you hate, get out of here, because you don't deserve to live in New York City.”
There was also a parade called "Stop Asian Hate" following attacks on Asians in Queens and Brooklyn.
