(VOVworld) – NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed his full support for the Turkish government during a telephone call with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Monday.

He said there is no room for military coups in a NATO member state. Following a failed military coup in Turkey last Saturday, Stoltenberg called for calm and restraint, and full respect for Turkey's democratic institutions and its constitution. He stressed that Turkey is a valued NATO ally.

The Turkish Ministry of the Interior dismissed nearly 9,000 people including police officers, mayors, and officials on Monday. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said more than 7,500 suspects including 100 police officers and 6000 soldiers were detained following the failed coup.
