The requiem commemorated the War Invalids and Martyrs Day on July 27th and reminded today’s generation of Vietnam’s tradition of paying debt of gratitude and educated them patriotism and remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives for national independence.
Monk Thich Gia Quang, Vice President of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha's (VBS) Executive Board, said: “The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and its Executive Boards in provinces which have martyrs’ cemeteries and memorial houses organize annual requiems. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the battle to defend the northern border, Ha Giang provincial Buddhist Sangha holds a requiem to commemorate the merits of soldiers and ordinary people who sacrificed their lives for national independence and freedom.”

Participants offered incense and flowers to pray for the souls of fallen soldiers and release birds for national peace and prosperity.
Nguyen Thi Lan lives in Vi Xuyen district: “I’m very moved to attend the requiem for fallen soldiers in Vi Xuyen cemetery. I always remember their merits and sacrifices for our peaceful life today.”
