(VOVworld) – National Assembly chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung host a banquet at the UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday to mark Vietnam’s 70^th National Day.

The event was attended by Saber Chowdhury, President of the Inter-parliamentary Union, Mogens Lykhtoft, President of the 70^th UN General Assembly, Jan Eliasson, Under Secretary of the United Nations, heads of delegations attending the 4^th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, heads of diplomatic missions to the UN, American friends, and representatives of the Vietnamese community in New York. Mr. Hung said that President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence on September 2, 1945, establishing the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the first worker-peasant state in Southeast Asia. The Vietnamese people will forever remember the support of international friends, the UN, and the IPU for their struggle for national liberation, reunification, construction, and defense.

The IPU President congratulated the Vietnamese people on Vietnam’s National Day and praised the success of the 132^nd IPU Assembly in Hanoi in March, which will contribute significantly to the 4^th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament and the UN Summit in September.
