(VOVWORLD) - Chair and wheelchair lifts will be installed at several public places in Hanoi under a 5-month pilot scheme starting in November.

The equipment will be made available at the Hanoi Rehabilitation Hospital, the Hanoi Opera House, and the Hanoi Railway Station thanks to a joint project between Vietnam’s labor ministry, the Japan International Cooperation Agency and Japan’s Syntex company.

“The disabled account for nearly 8% of Vietnam’s population. We are scouting out all possible options to make their life easier and help them better integrate into society,” stated Cao Thi Thanh Thuy, Vice Director of the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs during a discussion on the project on Wednesday.

The pilot scheme will likely be followed by the production of chair and wheelchair lifts in Vietnam by 2023.
