At the meeting in Can Tho city on Friday, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien urged the Mekong delta provinces to control input, especially breeds, and manage planning of aquaculture areas to avoid over-supply. He said the Vietnam Directorate of Fisheries must accelerate trade promotion in Europe, the US, Japan, and South Korea as some other markets have suspended importing Vietnamese Tra fish.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said: “This is also an opportunity for us to restructure production to a higher level. When Vietnam’s Tra fish production is recognized, more businesses will export Tra fish and many of them will enjoy zero tariff. It is a momentum to unlock the potential of Vietnam’s production of Tra fish.”

Vietnam Directorate of Fisheries said that last year total cultivation area of Tra fish in the Mekong delta stood at 6,600 ha, up 22% against 2018. Tra fish output reached 1.4 million tones and export turnover hit 2.1 billion USD, a decline of 11%.
